Footwear Factory Fire in Delhi Kills Two

A blaze at a footwear factory in Delhi, India, has killed two workers who were sleeping on the floor of the facility.

The factory, located in the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation in the Narela area of outer Delhi, manufactures plastic footwear.

According to reports in India’s Financial Express, firefighters from Delhi Fire Services were alerted about the blaze around 2:32 a.m. on Saturday, and found two men—one 33-year-old who worked as a guard at the factory and his 25-year-old friend who worked at a factory nearby—on the first floor of the factory where they had been sleeping before the fire started.

Both men had sustained burn injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival to a local hospital.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the blaze, but reports that have surfaced so far point to a short circuit. Roughly a dozen workers were present at the factory when the fire department arrived, but they managed to escape in a hurry, while the two men who died had been sleeping and ended up trapped.

Police told the Financial Express the area where the men were sleeping was used to store chemicals for the factory.
